Masks in the Wild is a public health project aimed at removing the fear and stigma surrounding the “new normal” of mandatory mask-wearing in public. Our goal is twofold; to provide as many New Yorkers with free, safe, artist-made masks and to mobilize out-of-work artists, seamsters and designers that are willing and able to create them. By utilizing masks as a canvas, artists can physically connect with the public in a safe and essential way.
Artists selected to participate will either receive plain white pre-made masks to embellish or free base materials including cotton fabric, elastic, and polyester to be used as an insert layer depending on their sewing abilities or requests. All participating artists will receive a stipend, sanitizer, personal protective equipment, and safety instructions.
